Unlocking the Vault

Unlocking the Vault

Have you ever been craving an old fashioned movie night and gone to the store to purchase a Disney Movie, only to find it unavailable?  Everyone knows that Disney is genius at marketing and separating you from your dollars, so what is up? It is the dreaded Disney Vault.

The “Disney Vault” is the term used by Disney for its policy of putting many of its most popular animated videos on moratorium.  Each Disney film is available for purchase for a limited time, after which it is put “in the vault” and not made available in stores for 7-10 years until it is once again released. Disney explains that it is a way to keep the titles fresh for new generations.

Don’t worry, you will probably always be able to buy Frozen.  There are only 16 movies which have been identified as “vault worthy”.  What are the 16 movies?  Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Lady & the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmatians, Jungle Book, The Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King.

Currently there are a lot of Disney movies available on Netflix.  That relationship is ending in 2019.  Disney will start two of its own subscription streaming services that will ultimately compete with Netflix, but have access to the entire Disney portfolio.  I know I will be a subscriber!snow white
